Ghost Town 05:01
When I moved into your town The welcoming committee wore shirts of brown When I tried to set my shop up in the street Every passerby looked right through me That was long ago and far away (just history) Those days have seen their end But it's a small world inhabited by little minds And those days are coming back again In the distant lands with names too hard to spell Men in uniform turn paradise to hell In our local haunts it only takes a dissenting opinion If ignorance is bliss then we're blissful people having fun Such fun turn on the TV: There's a monkey, there's a flock of sheep, They seem to get on, yes they do But when the monkey thumps his chest it's mutton stew and woolen vests But only for the chosen few 'Cos we're living in a ghost town In the olden days when things weren't quite the same, If you kept your senses you'd just change your name Like my father's father when the trouble did begin In the future could you change the color of your skin? Or change the way you dress? Well they'll still find you, you'll confess They've new orders that you can't refuse 'Cos it's an act of treason to ask questions to want reasons From men who hide their crimes behind the news When we're living in a ghost town Social woes just mean a few more detainees Segregate the different, register the diseased Soon the death squads will be knocking at your door Disappearing all the awkward folk who won't conform And as the knees jerk into line the goose step's smart their buttons shine There's a curfew there's a quarantine And when you find you're running in place, you know you've lost the human race Though some will claim a victory When we're living in a ghost town

Windsor Road 03:52
The party's over and everyone else is heading home Except that girl who spoke with you off and on all night long Well you can feel it in the air, you can see it in her eyes So you think you're nearly there, or maybe you've arrived But you better beware, 'cos you confused the signs You got lost on Windsor Road You held her in your arms then you had to let her go There's something about that girl, but you're never gonna know 'Cos you got lost on Windsor Road You sat together and you played her a song by your favorite band And she was so close you could have reached out and held her hand But when the music ended, how it all fell apart She couldn't really have meant it, she was only feeling sorry For your cracked front fender and the wreck you call your heart You got lost on Windsor Road You held her in your arms then you had to let her go There's something about that girl, but you're never gonna know 'Cos you got lost on Windsor Road And it's not hard, driving 'round the town With your radio on and the windows down To see a slender arm dangling out the car ahead And wonder if it's her, but you know better And it's not easy to pretend there's nothing wrong So your window's down and your radio's on She could drive you 'round the bend if you let her You swear you're on the mend, but you're no better Sometimes you look up and you can't believe how far it is you've gone But then you realize you're right back where it all went wrong With anonymous houses to your left and to your right But you don't need your compass or your theodolite To know the road ahead's treacherous, but off you ride You got lost on Windsor Road You held her in your arms then you had to let her go There's something about that girl, but you're never gonna know 'Cos you got lost on You got lost on You got lost on Windsor Road

Dresden 03:42
Sally's crying in the kitchen Clutching Kleenex tissues and at dreams of the clinic That's gonna solve her problem, it's a name and address That she got from one of the bad girls in her class But she doesn't have any money So she won't get that far Who's she gonna turn to when there's no white hat? Do you think she'd dare to get in her abusive father's car? Dresden Dresden We burned it down before, we can burn it down again Dresden Sadie's on the plane to Paris With her visa issued and a second set of baggage She's a name and address to help her solve her problem First a visit to the clinic then she'll do a little shopping 'Cos she's got a lot of money Or at least her daddy has He's not a politician or a diplomat Just a well-connected member of the ruling privileged class Dresden Dresden We put them to the torch and we never felt a thing Dresden Sammy's swinging with the Supremes He's principled and decent not some right-wing extremist So tuck your little problem back under your dress When that black-robed bastard says, "Father knows best" It's not a matter of money It's just a matter of time Before the bombs start dropping at his injunction On the distant clinics or your funny Valentine Dresden Dresden We'll put them to the sword or the hanger and the gin Dresden Dresden Dresden We burned it down before, we can burn it down again Dresden

This song is going to make you mad This song is going to make you buy new clothes You're not the best I've had Oh, baby, but you're coming awfully close You can run to the bedroom, pull the covers up tight But you know you'll feel much better with an all-night pillow fight Once upon a time you made me angry But I swear I was only bluffing and proud Can't you see that I'm still hungry Oh, baby, you knock my stuffing out I'll chase you to the bedroom if you try to hide 'Cos you know everything will be better with an all-night pillow fight It's an all-night pillow fight It's an all-night pillow fight Anything wrong is gonna be all right After an all-night pillow fight You little flirt in my boxers and shirt And your tasty little tongue on your delicious upper lip I'm not a fighter I'm a lover under covers With my pretty pillow pugilist It's an all-night pillow fight It's an all-night pillow fight Anything goes in the middle of the night In an all-night pillow fight I wrote a song and it made you angry If this is it I apologize But I can see that you're still hungry Your kiss is sweet while the feathers fly Let's stay inside the bedroom and lock the door And make peace in our silky sheets 'cos the bed's mightier than the sword It's an all-night pillow fight It's an all-night pillow fight Anything wrong is gonna be all right After an all-night pillow fight It's an all-night pillow fight It's an all-night pillow fight The laughter floats as the feathers fly In an all-night pillow fight

You don't speak for me I never ever asked you to You claim some higher authority But it's obvious you haven't got a clue You look so smug with your grin half cocked And self-proclaimed morality You're just a thug in a rich man's frock A bully menacing his street You don't speak for me I don't know why you think you do Tell me what you see When you look into a mirror it's just you 'Cos all the people you surround yourself with To give a whiff of statesmanship They disappear into thin air When you spout your fascist shit I can speak up for myself quite nicely I know my right from wrong like my night from day I don't believe half of the things you do And nothing that you say You don't speak for me You have to have it all your way Excuse me if I disagree But the world is not your eminent domain Quit the game, take your toys, run home Throw a tantrum, shake your fist There's a name for uptight boys like you You're a terrorist You don't speak for me...

about

The Late Joys debuted in 2004 in Robi Polgar's play, The Road To Wigan Pier: A (Socialist) Tea-Time Travelogue & Historical, Musical Revue," performing as the house band in a rather mirthful drama about coal miners in Wigan, England in the late 1930s. Following those performances, the band played from time to time, but the original lineup dissolved and in 2006 Mr. P recruited bassist Patrick Lopez and then drummer Rex Rizk to help restart the band. The new-look Late Joys started rehearsing in June and, two months later, decided they had enough of a handle on things to record some of their tunes, and this is the result.

All these songs are written by Polgar, running the gamut from the fun-lovin' bedroom antics of All-Night Pillow Fight to the more in-your-face abortion rights number, Dresden. In between are songs of love-n-loss, such as Windsor Road with its boy-meets-girl, boy-misses-his-chance-with-girl, boy-writes-about-it-years-afterwards (as if that might help) swagger, and the slap-in-the-face You Don't Speak For Me, dedicated to smarmy politicians of all stripes, who should know better about opening their mouths but don't. Ghost Town, while just a demo from a rehearsal session, has been tossed into the mix as one of those seminal early tunes used to score gigs at area clubs.
